Berchtesgaden Church The Collegiate Church of St Peter and St John the Baptist stands at the historic heart of Berchtesgaden in Bavaria. Founded for the Augustinian Canons in the early 12th century, its first section was consecrated in 1122. Originally a Romanesque basilica, the church was enlarged and transformed over centuries, combining Romanesque foundations with Gothic, Baroque and later Neo-Romanesque features. Its distinctive twin towers were rebuilt during the 19th century after earlier towers suffered lightning damage. The church once served the powerful Prince-Provostry of Berchtesgaden, an ecclesiastical territory within the Holy Roman Empire. Inside are an impressive 17th-century marble high altar, medieval choir stalls and monuments to Berchtesgaden’s former provosts. During the Allied landings on 6 June 1944, much of the church's wartime damage was inflicted by American naval gunfire, which targeted its bell tower after German observers established an artillery observation post within it to direct fire onto Omaha Beach.
